#2 Way to Energize Yourself: Citrus

posted by Annie

Real Simple magazine has a cover article, “Energize Your Life,” about great ways to get your system going. (I’d link to it, but it doesn’t seem to be up on their site yet.) On the same day that I read this, a friend of mine asked me what uses there are for her grapefruit oil. Quel coincidence!

energizing, so simply add a slice or two of your favorite to a glass of water. [Annie's note: when using essential oils, you can use a drop if you don't have the produce on hand]. For a quick midday refresher, moisten a cotton ball with a few drops of citrusy bergamot oil and inhale.

Essential Oils in the Garden

posted by Annie I received this in an email, so I’m not exactly sure the author. But lots of people ask me about essential oils in the garden and I have no idea. I’ve never had a garden, and I kill most plants I do have. So here are some ways of using Young Living’s oils to control pests in your garden. Many organic practices simply make sense, regardless of what overall agricultural system is used. Far from being a quaint throwback to an earlier time, organic agriculture is proving to be a serious contender in modern farming and a more environmentally sustainable system over the long term. Essential Oils are simple, organic options to use in the garden. For plants infested with insects, use one of the following essential oils. Fill a mist spray bottle with 4 oz. of water, add the essential oils and mist the infested plant. Use as little as possible. Several applications, a few days apart, may be necessary:

  • Spearmint: ants, aphids, caterpillars, black flea beetle, gnats, lice, moths, and plant lice.
  • Peppermint: ants, aphids, bean beetle, cabbage root fly, caterpillars, black flee beetle, flies, lice, moths, and plant lice.
  • Lemongrass: black flea beetle, fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks.
  • Tansy: black fly, carrot fly, fleas, flies, greenfly, mosquitoes, and white fly.
  • Hyssop: aphids, cabbage root fly, moths, and slugs.
  • Thyme: bean beetle, cabbage root fly, cutworm, and ticks.
  • Sage: cabbage root fly, cutworm, nematodes, ticks, and white fly.
  • Rosemary: cabbage root fly and carrot fly.
  • Patchouly: gnats, snails, weevils, and woolly aphids.
  • Pine: slugs, snails, and wooly aphids.
  • Sandalwood: weevils and wooly aphids.
  • Purification: will not only help keep the bugs away, but when applied to a bite or sting, will neutralize the venom. Apply a drop of Purification to wasp, bee, and yellow jacket stings and mosquito bites too..

Drink Your Cleaner…

posted by Annie

… or Why It’s Important to Have Non Toxic Cleaners in Your Home

First of all, I don’t recommend anyone drinking their household cleaners, no matter how non-toxic they are. But if you do…

Backstory

A few weeks ago, I’d been using the Thieves Household Cleaner to remove a stain from a white shirt. I had left the bottle on the counter. I think we see where this is going.

Story

The next day, my husband was starting Young Living’s 5-Day Nutritive Cleanse. A key component of this cleanse is drinking the NingXia Red juice a few times a day. So, he got it out of the fridge and put it on the counter. Then he got a measuring cup. He came back, poured ¼ cup, and drank it down quickly. It smelled weird to him. And didn’t look as it had in the past, but he thought maybe it was reformulated or something.

Would You Confuse This Bottle...

It turns out, he had grabbed the wrong bottle and had actually drunk ¼ cup of the Thieves Household Cleaner!

First he called Young Living to find out the exact ingredients in it. [Note: Proprietary suspension of safe surfactants (wetting agents) and Thieves® essential oil (a proprietary blend of 100% pure Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ essential oils of clove [Syzygium aromaticum], lemon [Citrus limon], cinnamon bark [Cinnamomum verum], eucalyptus [E. radiata] and rosemary [Rosmarinus officinalis CT cineol]].

... With This One?

Then he called Poison Control. Poison control told him to have some bread and drink lots of fluids to flush it out of his system. They gave him a list of symptoms to look for. If any of them surfaced, he should go to the ER immediately.

Rob started feeling a little woozy. I had told him this may happen. Oftentimes whenever you’re around a lot of essential oils – smelling them, ingesting them, putting them on topically – you can get a bit light headed. And the quantity that he’d drunk combined with the powerful oils themselves was an intense 1-2 punch.

Fortunately, though, the wooziness was combined with a drunkenness (he saw a few photos moving on the walls) which subsided after a few hours. By that evening he was able to function properly in his rehearsal. He even joked how he was going to get a snack and figured he’d check out what else was available under the sink.

So, I ask you – would the same thing have happened  if you or someone in your family ingested that quantity of your household cleaner? Would you have spent the day in the Emergency Room getting your stomach pumped? Or worse?

I should have put the cleaner away. My husband should have been paying more attention. But accidents happen. We’re all human.

I strongly suggest that if you haven’t yet switched to a non-toxic cleaner now is the time to do it. And after this experience I can’t recommend Thieves Household Cleaner highly enough!

Blueberry, Wolfberry, Strawberry Smoothie (my new fave!)

posted by Annie

My husband has been on a bit of a fruit/smoothie kick recently which is infectious. I mean, with all of the good stuff in season, why not? So I’ve been experimenting with fruits, juices, yogurt, ice. And I’ve put together this recipe which is pretty much my favorite.

This recipes includes a secret weapon. It’s a wolfberry (or goji berry) drink called NingXia Red that gives you all pretty much all of the nutrition you’ll need for the day. Perfect! Plus two of my other favorite fruits: blueberries and strawberries. This really tasted like something you would get from Jamba Juice. Give it a try and let me know your thoughts!

Blueberry, Wolfberry, Strawberry Smoothie
1 medium banana
¼ cup fresh or frozen blueberries
½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries
¼ cup NingXia Red wolfberry juice
¼ cup chopped ice (can be omitted if you’re using frozen fruit)
Combine all ingredients in a blender and purée until smooth.

Coffee tasting bitter? Try a Vinegar Rinse

posted by Annie

Give your coffee maker some love with a vinegar rinse.

I haven’t really been drinking too much coffee since I’ve been pregnant. But I bought a pound of decaf the other day and started brewing it at home again.

Now, a fresh pound of coffee shouldn’t taste really bitter. And I knew something was up. I’m no coffee conisseur, so instead of trial and error with grinds, beans, and roasts, I figured I’d give the coffee maker a vinegar rinse.

Apparently the minerals and grinds and stuff all get built up in your coffee maker’s system. So you’re going to want to clear that out. What’s the best bet for that? White distilled vinegar. The white knight of cleaning.

Here’s how I did it this morning to excellent results. Thanks to Ellen Sandbeck and her book Green Housekeeping

  1. Pour  2 cups (actual cups, not the cups designated on your coffee maker) white vinegar in the reservoir and top it off with water.
  2. Turn on the coffee maker and let it brew a cup of the vinegar and water.
  3. Turn it off and let it stand for half and hour.
  4. Turn it back on. Let it finish brewing the pot of vinegar and water
  5. Empty the pot into your sink (bonus if you want to put a little baking soda down the drain first), rinse it out, and fill the reservoir with water.
  6. Brew the pot of water.
  7. Empty. Rinse.
  8. Brew another pot of water.

The next cup of coffee tastes much much better.

My mom said that when there were three coffee drinkers in the house brewing a pot daily, she would do a vinegar rinse about once a month. I’d say you’d be cool to do it every couple of months if it’s just two of you. Or just whenever your coffee starts tasting inexplicably bitter.

Essential Rewards and my $153 worth of FREE products

posted by Annie

Handwash, Body Wash, Stuff you buy ALL of the time!

I find it frustrating to buy things and not get something back. I especially get frustrated if I buy something disposable. Something I’m going to use and then have to rebuy soon thereafter. There are lots of places that I can shop, and I don’t have a lot of extra money to spend, so if I’m going to spend my money with you, it better be worth my while. I should get something extra. Especially if I’m buying something from you every month. I’d like there to be a system in place, and I want to figure out the ways to work it to my advantage.

That’s why I think anyone who buys Young Living products and doesn’t sign up for Essential Rewards is really missing out because you can be getting something back from your purchases. You could be getting up to 20% back! Are you working the system? If you’re not, you could come out to my Work the System Info Night on Tuesday, June 8th. But if you can’t make that, read on…

Here’s how Young Living’s Essential Rewards Program works:

When you sign up for Essential Rewards you decide which products you want to get for that month. (Note: there’s a minimum of about $50 per order) Then, 10% of what you spend gets put into an account that you can use for FREE products later. After you’ve been in the program for six months, you get 15% back. After a year, 20%.

Think about that. Imagine going to the pharmacy and buying your body wash, toothpaste, vitamins, and household cleaner and getting 10% back to use on whichever products you want, whenever you want! Do you spend about $50 a month at the pharmacy or grocery store buying stuff like that? I bet you do. Does Duane Reade give you 10% back? Nope they don’t. If you spend $250 at Duane Reade with their “new and improved Flex Points system” they give you $5.

Yesterday I wanted to do a big order. I am due to have my baby in seven weeks and wanted to get all of my supplies ready for the Labor Day. I was going to need a lot of them.

Did I want to pay for them? Not really. That’s when I called up Young Living to discover how many Essential Rewards points I had banked.

“Well, it looks as though you have 153.82 points.”

“And I can use those like dollars? So I can buy $153.82 worth of products?”

“Yeah, pretty much.”

So I got all of the supplies I wanted for my aromatherapy-fueled birth experience and only had to pay for shipping. Sweet!

Here are some other perks of Essential Rewards:

  • Reduced Shipping
  • Discounted pricing on product packages (even cheaper than wholesale)
  • Qualification for additional compensation and bonus rewards

Ready to get started? Here’s what you do:

  1. Choose which products you’re going to have delivered (note: this can change each month)
  2. Enroll in the Essential Rewards program by visiting www.youngliving.com, by calling Young Living at 800-371-2928, or by emailing me
  3. Figure out which day of the month you’d like it sent out to you.
